PYRO gives students from all over the Pacific Northwest focused musical training and exposure to the greatest of rock and orchestral literature. Rehearsals are framed within a fun and energetic environment with numerous opportunities to work with professional musicians. PYRO presents multiple concerts a year crossing musical boundaries between traditional classical music and contemporary rock genres.
Originally founded by Portland native guitar master and educator Brent Gunter, PYRO first began as a Guitar Based Program in 2006 and eventually expanded into a group of Hybrid Orchestras in 2011. Its mission is to inspire, educate and develop students from a wide range of musical backgrounds into confident, open-minded and highly skilled musicians.
Today, PYRO is comprised a few different orchestras in two locations, all with original arrangements tailored to each performance group. PYRO and is open to students ages 7-19 at any level. There is a beginner "Intro To Rock Orchestra" which is open by registration to all musicians (no experience needed) while the Chamber Rock Orchestra and Advanced Rock Orchestras require an audition for membership.
The conductor and orchestrator is Willow Goodine, who has played music for over 30 years and is influenced heavily by jazz and improvisational music. Willow composes and arranges original music that has been played by professional orchestras including members of the Seattle Symphony and also has movie credits on IMDb for scores he created, conducted, and produced professionally. He also orchestrates music for many west coast theaters and various northwest orchestras.
